Search Engine Optimization – Definitions & Abbreviations

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the practice of optimizing a website to improve its ranking and results location by online search engines. SEO is a key component to successful Internet Marketing platforms like IgnitionWeb.

Blog - From "Web log." A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger." Googlebot – Google’s spider. Google is by far the most import search engine.

RSS feed - RSS is an acronym for Rich Site Summary, an XML format for distributing news headlines on the Web, also known as syndication. (Source: www.everything2.com). RSS feed help exchanging headlines (with links!) between sites and this promotes building a site's neighbourhood.

SE spam - Refers to the overuse of SEO techniques and if caught, results in a penalty from the search engines.

SEO – Search Engine Optimization. The term SEM (search engine marketing) is often used with the same meaning although it technically refers to a broader range of website marketing efforts which include paid advertising on the SE results pages.

Spider (Search Engine Spider) – a program that visits websites and collects information about them. The collected information is indexed and used later to serve SE clients with proper search results.
